About

These mammals resemble miniature kangaroos, but you won’t find them in Australia.

This rare species of marsupial is native to the forests of New Guinea and is also known as the dusky wallaby. As marsupials, they carry their young in a pouch. Other marsupials include kangaroos, wombats, koalas, and possums. Dusky pademelons also have large ears to detect predators, strong hind legs, and a short, thick tail for balance.

The dusky pademelon population is estimated to have declined by 30% over the last 15-20 years, largely due to hunting for its meat.
