Temporary Smoking & Vaping Restrictions
Temporary smoking and vaping restrictions introduced at Chester Zoo and The Reserve
Due to prolonged dry conditions and an increased risk of wildfires, we’ve introduced temporary restrictions on smoking and vaping across Chester Zoo and The Reserve, effective from Monday 17 August.
As a conservation charity, protecting wildlife and habitats is at the heart of what we do. Chester Zoo is home to an incredible array of precious species, not only within our 130-acre zoo but across the 600 acres of land we’re responsible for, including our nature reserve.
During prolonged periods of dry weather, these areas can become particularly vulnerable to fire. Even a small ignition source can lead to a rapidly spreading wildfire, with the potential to cause serious and long-lasting damage to wildlife, habitats and surrounding land.
We recognise that most of our visitors, members and guests act responsibly and share our commitment to protecting nature. These temporary restrictions are about minimising avoidable risks during a period of particularly high fire danger, while keeping Chester Zoo, The Reserve and our nature reserve open for people to enjoy.
What this means for visitors
Smoking and vaping will not be permitted within our zoo grounds, including our nature reserve, or within the grounds of The Reserve while the restrictions are in place.
Visitors to Chester Zoo who wish to smoke can use a designated smoking area outside the zoo perimeter, in our main car park. The area is on hardstanding and located away from vegetation, trees and grassed areas.
Guests staying at The Reserve can use a designated smoking area outside the hotel, in the car park, which is also located on hardstanding and away from vegetation.
We kindly ask everyone visiting us to help protect the wildlife and habitats in our care by following the restrictions and only use these designated areas.
Visitors will be informed of the temporary restrictions ahead of their visit, with clear signage across our sites providing reminders and directing smokers to the designated smoking areas.
Thank you for helping us protect the wildlife and nature we all love.
